Umrah visa: Apply via Nusuk app or approved UK agent. Processing 24 to 72 hours. Cost approximately £100 to £120.

What you will feel: Every first-time pilgrim describes seeing the Kaaba for the first time as the most overwhelming moment of their life. No guide prepares you for it — and none needs to.
No amount of reading fully prepares you for your first Umrah. But the practical preparation — visa, hotel, what to pack, what the rites involve, what Makkah and Madinah actually feel like on the ground — makes the difference between a pilgrimage spent navigating confusion and one spent in full presence.
This guide covers everything a first-time UK pilgrim needs to know before departure. It is written specifically for those who have never been to Makkah or Madinah before — not as a religious instruction, but as the practical knowledge that helps you focus entirely on worship when you arrive.
Understanding the Umrah rites — what you will do
Umrah consists of four sequential acts. Understanding them before you arrive removes the anxiety of the unknown and lets you focus on the spiritual significance of each step.
Ihram — the state of ritual purity and intention entered before arriving in Makkah. For pilgrims flying from the UK, the Miqat (the boundary point where Ihram must be entered) is typically reached during the flight. Men wear the white Ihram garments — two unsewn white cloths. Women dress modestly with the face uncovered. The intention (niyyah) for Umrah is made at this point. Once in Ihram, certain actions are prohibited until the rites are complete.
Tawaf — the circumambulation of the Kaaba seven times in an anticlockwise direction. This takes place inside Masjid Al-Haram. For first-time pilgrims, the sight of the Kaaba on entering the mosque is the moment most describe as the most profound of their lives. Tawaf begins and ends at the Black Stone (Hajar Al-Aswad). It is performed at walking pace — there is no rush, no requirement to touch the Black Stone if the crowds make it difficult.
Sa’ee — the walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa, commemorating the actions of Hajar (AS). Sa’ee is performed inside the covered Sa’ee hall within Masjid Al-Haram, adjacent to the Tawaf area. The distance of each pass is approximately 450 metres — the full Sa’ee covers about 3.15 kilometres. Elderly pilgrims and those with mobility limitations can use wheelchairs and electric carts available throughout the Sa’ee hall.
Halq or Taqsir — the cutting or shaving of hair that marks the completion of Umrah. Men may shave the head completely (Halq) or cut the hair equally from all parts (Taqsir). Women cut a small amount from the ends of their hair. After this act, the state of Ihram is lifted and normal life resumes.
Choosing your first Umrah hotel in Makkah
The hotel decision for your first Umrah matters more than most first-time pilgrims expect. The distance between your hotel and Masjid Al-Haram directly determines how much of your stay is spent walking rather than worshipping. For a first Umrah, the recommendation is clear: stay within walking distance of the Haram if your budget allows.
Walking distance means within 500 metres of a named mosque gate — typically King Abdulaziz Gate (Gate 1) for hotels in the Clock Tower area, or Ajyad Gate for hotels in the Ajyad district. A hotel genuinely within 500 metres means you can attend every prayer at Masjid Al-Haram without planning, without transport logistics, and without the physical drain of long walks in Saudi heat.
For first-time pilgrims on a standard budget, the 3-star Ajyad district properties at 400 to 700 metres from the Haram represent the best value-proximity balance. They are clean, functional, genuinely walking distance, and considerably more affordable than the Clock Tower luxury properties. For families or those who can stretch the budget, 4-star properties in the Jabal Omar development (8 to 12 minutes walk) offer reliable quality with manageable access.

Choosing your first Umrah hotel in Madinah
Most first-time pilgrims visit Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah — the blessed city of the Prophet ﷺ — as part of the same trip. The standard itinerary is Makkah and Madinah in the same journey, typically 4 to 5 nights in Makkah and 3 to 4 nights in Madinah, or the reverse.
In Madinah, the northern zone near Gate 25 and Bab Al Salam is the recommended location for first-time pilgrims. This area provides the most direct approach to Masjid An-Nabawi, the closest access to the Rawdah Al-Sharifa, and for women pilgrims, the nearest hotels to the women’s dedicated entrances.
Booking the Rawdah visit via the Nusuk app is essential. Slots open 3 to 7 days before your planned visit and fill quickly during busy periods. Set a reminder and book the morning the window opens. For first-time pilgrims, visiting the Rawdah — the blessed area between the Prophet’s ﷺ pulpit and his blessed resting place — is an experience of profound significance. Your hotel’s proximity to the northern gate determines how smoothly and calmly you reach it.
What to pack for first Umrah — the practical list
Documents: Passport (minimum 6 months validity from arrival date), Umrah visa printout or digital copy, hotel booking confirmations with property confirmation numbers, travel insurance documents, emergency contact list.
Ihram garments (men): Two sets of white Ihram cloths — buy quality, not the thinnest available. Ihram sandals that will hold up across several kilometres of Tawaf and Sa’ee.
Clothing (women): Modest loose-fitting clothing covering arms and legs. Several sets — Makkah is warm year-round and you will perspire. White or light colours are practical for Ihram observance periods.
Practical items: Unscented soap, shampoo, and toiletries (scented products are prohibited in Ihram). Small backpack for the mosque. Comfortable shoes for walking — not sandals alone; the marble floors of the mosque are extensive. Reusable water bottle — ZamZam water is freely available throughout Masjid Al-Haram. Small prayer mat if preferred. Phone charger and adapter (Saudi Arabia uses Type G sockets — the same as the UK).
Medications: Any prescription medications in original packaging with a letter from your GP. Pain relief and blister treatment — new shoes and extensive walking are a common combination for first-time pilgrims. Oral rehydration sachets — the combination of heat, fasting, and physical exertion can cause dehydration quickly.
First Umrah — what to expect on arrival in Makkah
Flights from the UK land at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, approximately 80 kilometres from Makkah. The journey to Makkah by road takes 45 minutes to 90 minutes depending on traffic. Your hotel transfer should be arranged in advance — do not assume taxis are readily available at the airport for Makkah-bound travel during peak periods.
Hotel check-in time in Makkah is typically 16:00. If you arrive earlier, most hotels will store your luggage and let you freshen up in the lobby before your room is ready. Do not attempt to perform Tawaf immediately on arrival if you are tired from the journey — rest, eat, and approach the mosque fresh.
Your first sight of the Kaaba will likely be from outside the mosque before you enter — glimpsed through one of the gates or across the Mataf. Many first-time pilgrims describe this moment as the one they had anticipated their entire lives. Take it in. There is no schedule for this moment.
Common mistakes first-time UK pilgrims make
- Booking a hotel too far from the Haram and underestimating the physical impact of long walks multiple times a day, every day
- Not booking the Rawdah slot in advance — arriving in Madinah without a permit and waiting days for an available slot
- Packing scented toiletries and not being able to use them during Ihram
- Wearing new shoes for the first time in Makkah — break in footwear before travel
- Not carrying a copy of the property confirmation number for every hotel booking — essential in case of check-in issues
- Attempting too many additional Umrahs or Tawaf in the first days — exhaustion is a real risk. Pace yourself across the full length of your stay
- Not checking passport validity — minimum 6 months from arrival date is required. Many UK pilgrims have been turned away at the airport for this reason
First Umrah booking timeline — UK pilgrims
- 3 to 4 months before travel: Choose your dates. Begin hotel enquiry for Makkah and Madinah. Book flights.
- 2 to 3 months before: Confirm hotel bookings and pay. Apply for Umrah visa via Nusuk or UK agent.
